Guilin 2009 (桂林) : There is one popular Chinese saying: 桂林山水甲天下 - "Guilin’s scenery is best among all under heaven." The photos here cover two of the most popular scenic spots: Yangshuo (阳朔) and Longsheng Rice Terrace (龙胜悌田).

Yuan Yang Terraced Fields : The Terraced Fields of the Hani People in YuanYang are located in southern Yunnan, China. The whole area is filled with tall mountains cut by deep valleys. The terraced fields and sea of clouds form a uniquely majestic and beautiful scene. In the past hundreds of years, the diligent and intelligent minorities of Hani, Yi, Miao and Yao who lives in the mountain have opened up this splendid terrace. The terrace extends thousands of miles (360,000 mu) and is regarded as one of the wonders of the World. After every spring festival, farmers reserve water to nourish the fields. From that comes the wonderful scene formed by the dark color of the ridges and lights reflected from waters in the fields, in all shapes and curves. In the early morning, under the continuous heavy fog, with colorful reflections in shallow water and heavy mountain slopes, the yuanyang terraced fields look just like traditional Chinese paintings, an epitome of man and nature in harmony.

Jiankou Great Wall with G10 : Climbed with hand and foot another section of Jiankou Great Wall last weekend and carrying with me only the Canon G10. My other Great Wall photos taken with the Canon 5D can be seen here: http://meocre.smugmug.com/gallery/6337378_PyziS#407085483_4H6H2 Relative to the Canon 5D and a couple of L glasses, this was like carrying nothing. Hopefully I will be carrying the 5D Mark II when I climb the Great Wall next time.

The Great Wall of China : Climbing the Great Wall with heavy photo equipment is no easy task. The Wall generally crosses the highest points of the ridges and mostly quite rough. But the views are spectacular and well worth the efforts.

Li Jiang, Shangrila, 2007 : Impression of Li Jiang and Shangrila in 12/2007:
Wrong season for sure -- no Spring or Autumn colors, nor winter snow
Lijiang -- way overly commercialized, the famous old town is only worth viewing from afar
Shangrila -- no feeling of reaching the "Lost Horizon". Everybody told us to come back in Spring. But then it will be full of tourists.
Missed Melli Snow Mt this round -- something for next time.

Xin Jiang, July 2006 : We had a most wonderful trip to Xin Jiang. It started with a gathering at Hong Kong's Tsim Sha Tsui at 5:30am on July 1. The first day ended with a sunset over The Multicolored City at 22:00. Thereafter we had another 10 LONG and tiring days. The land is vast and we traveled over 4,000 km in 11 days. We almost broke our backs crossing Tien Shan (Mt. Heaven) in 4WDs. Fortunately, we were compensated with the best of company, the best scenery, the best whole lamb lunch, and accommodating weather. This must be one of life's best moments.

We must thank Yvonne for arranging the trip. I must also thank other memebers of this trip for sparing me time to take photos. I hope you find the photos worthy of the many hours of traveling and waiting.

The places we visited in order were:

1. Multicolored City 2. The Burning Mountains 3. Kanas Nature Reserve 4. Rainbow Beach 5. Demon City (Many Chinese Kung Fu movies including Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Seven Swordsmen of Mt. Heaven were made here) 6. The Sayrim Lake 7. YiNing River 8. The Naraty Grasslands 9. The Bayanbulak Grasslands 10. Sunset at The Kaidu River's Nine Turns 11. Crossing Tien Shan 12. The Mystic Gorges of Tien Shan 13. The Kizil Grottoes (Chinese name literally means a thousand budda painted on grottoes) 14. Tien Chi (Lake Heaven)
